Nourishing power balls

sesame-power-balls-640x360Want a yummy, nutritious snack to get you through until the next meal? Then these are it! They’re so quick and easy to make, that the excuse ‘I don’t have time to cook’ just doesn’t cut it – first, because you don’t really have to cook, and, second, it takes only 15 or so minutes to make.

The credit for this recipe goes to the food blog ..it pleases us. I’ve modified it ever so slightly.

Recipe

Makes about 12 balls.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup hulled tahini (sesame seed paste)
  • ½ cup ground lindseeds or LSA mix {this is a mixture of ground Linseed, Sunflower seeds and Almonds, and can be found in the health food isle of supermarkets, and in health food stores}.
  • ¼ cup nuts of your choice. I used walnuts. Almonds, hazelnuts and unsalted pistachios would work just as well.
  • ¼ cup chopped goji berries or dried, sulphur-free cranberries {or dried fruit of your choice}
  • 2–3 tbsp organic, raw honey or maple syrup {vegan}
  • 1 tbsp coconut flour (optional). I just find that adding this makes binding the balls easier, as the coconut flour soaks up the oil in the tahini paste.
  • ½ cup desiccated coconut

Method

  1. Chop nuts and dried fruit into small pieces.
  2. In a medium bowl, add tahini, LSA, nuts, dried fruit, honey/maple syrup/agave and, if using, coconut flour. Mix well until thoroughly combined.
  3. If the mixture is too soft to roll into balls, add more LSA. If the mixture is too dry, add more tahini. Taste the mixture and adjust any of the ingredients further until it meets the flavour and texture to your liking.
  4. Roll the mixture into balls of about 1 inch in diameter (about the same size as golf balls).
  5. On a plate, roll the balls in the desiccated coconut.
  6. Voila! Easy, peasy and quick vegan power balls. Enjoy!

  1. I love that you love these! I think they’re fabulous too.

    Also great that you noticed honey is not vegan – how remiss of me! I’ll have to update my blog post.

    1. Hi! Thanks for posting this recipe on your blog. BTW, I love your blog! I subscribe to it -even though some of the recipes don’t suit my diet, there are ones that occasionally do, like this one! I also tweeted your latest gluten-free post a day ago 🙂

      And thanks for commenting — I’m new to blogging and tweeting, so it’s nice to hear from others 🙂

  2. Hi
    I made the vegan power balls recently & they were a hit. They’re incredibly easy to make. Looking forward to whipping some up tonight.

    1. That’s great news, Spiri! Glad you like them. You can play around with the recipe to suit your taste. I made a batch recently, too, and added cocoa powder and chopped dates 🙂 Yum, yum!

      Ps: Thanks for commenting – really appreciate it! 🙂

  3. These are great, although I had to up the honey quotient because I found the unhulled tahini very bitter… but, even as a non-organic carnivore I could appreciate the taste and health benefits of this recipe. My 16 month old loved them too. Thanks!

  4. always terrific to get a great recipe, however a lot of these power-ball recipes always rely on nuts (both daughters are allergic to all nuts and sesame) as the binding agent. Any suggestions on how to create a nutritious alternative without the nuts- perhaps seeds of some type to give a bit of crunch and texture

    1. These balls are really easy and you can use any variations. try making it up with seeds {sunflower, pepita, sesame}, desiccated coconut, cocoa, linseed {flaxseed} meal, coconut butter, tahini, dates etc ~ play with the dry versus wet ingredients to get the right consistency to bind.

  5. Hi Lesh, Have been given your website by a good friend of mine who is very health conscious. We both thave thermies and love to cook. I have tried a few of your recipies now and they are so easy as well as delish. These balls in particular are very quick and I am looking forward to experimenting with the favours suggested above. Love the sound of cocoa, date and coconut butter, Hmm, thats the next one I think. Thank you for sharing your amazing recipies and Im looking forward to working my way through them..

  6. I love that you say where to find the ingredients! Saves us walking around the super market looking like lost chooks.

    Can’t wait to make these! 🙂
